Pool Maintenance and Safety Tips

Enjoying time at the swimming pool can be one of the best pastimes in the summer. Maintaining a safe and energy efficient pool is worth the time and investment. These tips will help keep your family and friends safe poolside and help you reduce energy usage, keeping money in your pocket!

Pool Safety
  • There are risks for electrical shocks in and around the pool.  Take proper precautions.  Check for sparks coming from electrical equipment and keep a fiberglass Shepherd’s crook/rescue hook in case you need to safely remove electrocuted persons from the pool without shocking yourself.
  • Take an online pool safety course recommended by the American Red Cross and National Swimming Pool Foundation.
  • Get swimming lessons for children and CPR lessons for supervising adults.
  • Make sure that pool drains are equipped with anti-entrapment drain covers.

Pool Maintenance
-Keep a pool cover on your pool when not in use. In addition to being a safety feature, pool covers reduce water evaporation, reducing water heating costs and preventing the need to top off your pool’s water level frequently.

-Install a pool gate that is at least four feet high with a self-locking feature if you have small children as a drowning precaution. You can also install a pool alarm that sounds when someone enters the pool.

-Consider installing an energy efficient variable-speed pool pump. These pumps reduce the pool’s total energy usage by cycling on and off at the optimal times of day. Both APS and SRP have rebates available to customers that upgrade to these energy saving pool pumps.

-Consider installing a solar pool water heater. According to the Department of Energy, this is one of the most affordable types of solar to invest in and you can see a full payback in the cost of the system in 1.5 to 7 years.
