Winter Holiday Safety and Energy Tips

Even this baby takes safety seriously!  And saving money on home energy costs can turn her frown around!  These are a few electrical safety and energy saving tips to help you and your family enjoy a secure and happy holiday season.

LED Lighting

Consider upgrading your holiday and household lighting to LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs.  LED lights are up to 75% more energy efficient that incandescent bulbs and are one of the most durable and lasting energy saving lighting options.  In the U.S. alone, more than $30 billion in electricity savings can be gained with widely substituting LED lights by 2027 according to Energy.gov.  The best part, the energy savings will leave more money in your pocket for holiday shopping now!

Fire Safety

  • Have your smoke alarms tested by a licensed electrician regularly.  Make sure that each unit has charged batteries.
  • Create an emergency evacuation plan for your family in case of a fire and run through regular drills.  View the NFPA’s Home Fire Escape Plan checklist.
  • Space heaters should be placed at least three feet from anything flammable and should preferably have an automatic shutoff timer.  They should also not be used as a primary heating source as space heaters can consume more energy than a standard central heating unit.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher on standby in case of small fires in the kitchen, near the Christmas tree, or from the fireplace.  Conduct quick checks each month to ensure that pressure is correct and that it’s free of dents, leaks, or obstructions.  Have it serviced by a professional annually.
