Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke & CO detectors lifesaver, only if they work
3 out of 5 home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. Half of home fire deaths happens between 11 pm and 7 am. Therefore, smoke detectors should be installed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home to make sure that residents will be woken up by the alarms.

Besides from a fire, carbon monoxide (CO) is also a threat to households with burning appliances, water heaters, space heaters, grills, or vehicles. Although CO is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, it can be lethal when inhaled. Thus, the name “silent killer” is given. CO detectors should be installed in every level of the home and in sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide poisoning can include symptoms such as
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Sleepiness
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
Arizona legislation requires CO alarms and smoke alarm with a 10-year lithium battery to be installed to ensure safety (Arizona Legislation). Smoke detectors should be certified by UL or other labs to meet the UL-2034 Standard. Nowadays, there are CO & smoke combination alarms that can be installed.

Test and replace detectors
Smoke detectors and CO detectors should be tested monthly to make sure that the battery is not dead by pressing the test/reset button. They should also be replaced every 10 years from the date of manufacture because dust and other air particles can wear down the sensor. If you hear a high chirp from the smoke detector, it is reminding you that it is time to replace the battery.

There are also many newer models that allow interconnectivity with other alarms and smart home security systems. Regularly maintaining and replacing your CO detectors and smoke detectors at home can help to keep your family and love ones safe.
