How to Maximize Your Fridge’s Energy Efficiency

The refrigerator is perhaps the most important appliance in a home, but it is often underappreciated until it has a breakdown. Here are some common mistakes that contribute to refrigerator repairs.

Mistake #1: Condenser coils and fans are not cleaned regularly
The refrigerator dissipates heat with its condenser coils. Hence, keeping your coils and fans clean can help your refrigerator to be more energy efficient. Simply unplug your fridge and vacuum/brush away the dust. This should be done at least twice a year (more frequently if you have a furry pet).

Mistake #2: Crowding/not filling up your fridge

Keep your freezer and fridge about three quarters full. Refrigerators need some “thermal mass” to maintain low temperatures. This means that it should be filled with some “stuff”, but shouldn’t be overcrowded so much that it is blocking the vents or limiting air circulation.

Mistake #3: Setting the refrigerator temperature too high or too lowThe temperature should be set between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If your refrigerator does not show temperature settings, measure it with a thermometer placed in a glass of water. Let it chill for 8 hours before taking your reading.

Mistake #4: Dirty door seals
Refrigerator doors must be sealed tightly to prevent cool air from leaking out. The seal should be wiped down with warm water and a sponge at least twice a year.

Mistake #5 Stinky smell in the fridge
As long as there is no rotting food, charcoal (active carbon), crumpled newspaper, and baking soda can effectively deodorize the refrigerator.
