Dishwashers Do's and Don'ts

The dishwasher is a lifesaver for those who dread to do their dishes. However, the dishwasher is perhaps one of the most commonly misused appliances in any household. Here are several tips to help you to master the art of dishwashing.

  1. Dishes are not loaded correctly.
After rinsing off most of the excess food scrap, did you load them correctly into the dishwasher? Dishes should be facing down and towards the spray nozzle to get a thorough cleaning. Silverware and utensils should be placed in the utensil rack. Make sure that the lightweight plasticware will not move around in the dishwasher. Fragile or expensive glassware is still best to be hand washed to prevent the glass from shattering during the wash.
  2. Rinse cycle is too intense.
Typically, a light to normal wash is enough to clean most of the residue. Heavy wash cycles can be used for very greasy dishes, like those used for baking. Selecting the correct cycle can help you to save water and electricity.
  3. Not using the correct form or amount of dish detergent.
Regular liquid dishwashing soap should not be used in a dishwasher to prevent water leakage. Choose automatic dishwashing detergent (liquid or powder) instead for the task. After measuring the correct amount of detergent according to the instructions, place it in the dispenser, typically located on the inside of the dishwasher door.
  4. Filters and racks are not cleaned periodically.
All removable parts, such as racks, utensil holders, or the bottom filter should be pulled out and cleaned occasionally to remove any food residue that might be stuck on it.
  5. Air dry instead of using the dry cycle.
You can save some electricity by skipping the dry cycle. Leave the door open and allow your dishes to air dry in the racks.

Good news is, using the dishwasher at a full load will use less water than doing dishes manually (hand wash). If your dishwasher has water leakage, will not drain, cannot be closed properly, etc., it is best to consult an appliance repair professional.
