- Identify your needs and priorities
Whether it is lawn, paver, garden or drainage, first identify which is more important; a tree that is about to fall or getting the paver redone. - Defining goals
By the end of the season, what is the end-result that you are looking for? Is your idea specific and achievable? Defining goals beforehand can help in planning and budgeting. - Plan and create a timeline
Make backyard maintenance a priority. By designating time specifically for yardwork in your calendar, you are more likely to do it than procrastinate till fourth of July.
- Lawn
Different types of turf have different needs, but all lawns benefit from regular mowing. Besides, you might want to add fertilizer and check if your sprinklers are still functioning properly. - Plants and gardening
Depending on the types of plant or garden you have, you might want to add more soil or fertilizer. Besides, you should also pay attention to the bugs and make sure that you are watering the plants correctly. - Deck
Wooden decks should be sealed every few years. Avoid painting your deck if possible because if there is any moisture trapped underneath, it will peel your paint, creating an extra process in maintenance. Stain simply fades, but can be easily added again; but if paint peels, it will need to be completely redone. Moreover, limit washing your deck as introducing moisture on wood is not desirable. - Patio pavers and concrete slabs
Pavers are rather low maintenance. Keep your patio and pavers clean by sweeping off dirt and debris as often as you can, but careful to not overdo washing a stone patio. Often times, unless there is mold or fungus, rinsing should be enough for cleaning. If there are any spots on your pavers, dish soap and water can be used to clean with a rag or sponge. You can also consider applying a paver sealer to get a glossy finish and protect your pavers from dirt or stains. However, don’t feel obligated to seal your patio. Some materials tend to self-seal under foot traffic. - Lighting and electrical
Always check for any exposed wires to avoid electrical shock. When using any electrical appliances outdoors, make sure it is outdoor-rated as it is built to withstand some level of moisture and temperature change.
