How to Clean a Pool

Maintaining a pool is a big commitment. Despite the amount of work needed weekly, a pool is still a desirable feature to have in anyone’s backyard in this blazing hot Arizona summer. So, let’s dive in with some tips on pool maintenance.

  1. Skim the surface daily (if possible)
Debris, such as leaves and branches, should be removed daily to avoid stains or debris from sinking to the bottom.
  2. Clean skimmer(s)
Emptying the baskets in the skimmer and pump will maintain good water flow into the filter system, so clean weekly or as often as possible.
  3. Vacuum weekly
In order to avoid accumulation of dust, dirt, and other debris, regular vacuuming is important. Remember to brush down the whole pool, direct the jets on the poolside downward, and pour in water before backwashing and vacuuming.
  4. Test and adjust the chemicals
No one wants to swim in a germ-infested pool. Maintaining these chemicals in appropriate ranges can disinfect the water and protect your pool. Use pool testing strips to measure these chemical levels frequently. The table below shows the recommended level ranges and how often a pool should be tested.

    Recommended LevelTesting Frequency
    pH Level7.4 – 7.6Twice a week
    Total Alkalinity80 – 120 ppmOnce a week
    Chlorine1.0 – 2.0 ppmTwice a week
    Calcium Hardness180 – 400 ppmTwice a season
    Cyanuric Acid40 – 80 ppmTwice a season
Total Dissolved SolidsLess than 5000 ppmOnce a week

If the test result is not within the appropriate ranges, adjustments are needed. Chlorine, shocking products, and algaecide are some of the most common chemicals you will need.
  5. Check and clean pool filters
There are 3 basic types of filters: D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth), sand, and cartridge. The most common filter here in Arizona is a cartridge filter. In order to maintain maximum efficiency, remove any debris and grime caught in the pool filter basket weekly. Filters should be backwashed or cleaned at least once a month, depending on the type of filter. Some filters need special care and maintenance, so it is best to check beforehand.
Cleaning your pool is a never-ending task that requires constant attention, especially during the summer when it is most used. However, your hard work will pay off. Regular upkeeping will save you money from having to replace broken parts or get new appliances; nonetheless, the cooling water will make your summer more complete.
