- Clean the coils. AC coils that have not been cleaned can trap heat inside and hinder your AC’s cooling. This can cause your unit to work harder and therefore breakdown more often. You may be spending more money on your energy bill and on repairs because of this. Cleaning the AC coils can also lead to a longer life for your unit. To clean the coils, first disconnect the AC from the power (there should be an “off” button inside on your thermostat, as well as a switch on the physical unit). From there detach the outer panels, caging, and top of the unit. Next, bush away the dirt and dust from the coils. To actually clean the coils, fill a spray bottle with water or diluted cleaner that you can spray directly onto the coils. Rinse the coils before reassembling the unit.
- Make sure the electrical panel is okay. There may be a fuse that has been blown, or a tripped breaker. There are two different solutions to this. First of all, the fuse may need to be replaced. Second, try resetting the breaker by turning it off and back on again. An electrician will need to be called if these issues continue, as there could be a short in the system.
- Check to see if there are any electronic devices near your thermostat. A common reason why air conditioners are overworked and develop issues is because your thermostat is sensing more heat in your home than there actually is. Avoid putting lamps, stereos, televisions, and other electronics that radiate heat near the thermostat. The thermostat should then be able to properly gauge your home’s temperature and your AC unit will run an appropriate amount of time.
