Installing Proper Insulation

insulationNow that it is finally getting cooler, weatherizing your home for the cooler months may be beneficial to you. Keeping your home comfortable and preventing the temperature from fluctuating from outside weather can be solved by installing insulation. Insulation slows down the transfer of heat, so warm air inside won’t permeate through the walls as fast. Another advantage of insulation is that installing it properly can save you on your next energy bill, saving you money in the long run. If you are interested, here are some tips on how to get started.
  1. Choose the right type of insulation. Here are a couple of different types so you can see which is the best fit for your home.
    • Fiberglass: Batt and blanket fiberglass insulation is the most common insulation in the United States. It is also fairly easy to install yourself. Batts come pre-cut instead of in one big roll as the blankets are.
    • Rock Wool: Also known as mineral wool insulation, this type is similar to fiberglass. An advantage of this one is that it can handle high temperatures better than other types of insulation.
    • Cellulose: This is the eco-friendliest option. Made from recyclable materials, this type of insulation can minimize fire damage to your home.
    • Spray Foam: When you just need to fill in small or oddly shaped spaces, spray foam insulation is perfect for you.
  1. DIY: Install your insulation. The insulation should cover the floors, walls, and even doors of your attic. If you have a basement in your home (although uncommon in Arizona), make sure to insulate it as well. Always prioritize safety while installing. Wear proper hats, gloves, and goggles for protection.
  2. OR, hire a licensed and insured contractor to install it for you. Some types of insulation require specialized skills and professionals who are trained to install insulation can help you get the job done. When contacting a company to install your insulation in your area, make sure your contractor is licensed and insured.
  3. Consider performing a home energy audit. Both electric utilities APS and SRP offer the Home Performance with Energy Star Programs.  The auditor will run diagnostics to let you know what work can be completed in your home to increase your energy savings including insulation. You may also qualify for rebates.
