The Pros and Cons of Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless Water Heater_retSometimes referred to as instantaneous water heaters, these water heaters do just that; provide your home with hot water instantaneously when it is needed. A tankless water heater may be right for your home, however, if you are considering installing a tankless water heater you need to make sure you have all of the facts. We’ve compiled a list of many things you need to know about tankless water heaters.

HOW THEY WORK
When the hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through the pipe. It is then heated up either through electricity or a gas burner.  There is no storage tank involved because of this method. This allows for a supply of hot water anytime, and most importantly when you want it.

THE PROS
  • Since the water is heated up only when you need it, tankless water heaters avoid standby energy loss that is associated with standard storage water heaters. This makes them incredibly energy efficient.
  • The energy you save will lower the cost of your energy bill.
  • It provides you with hot water whenever you need it. No more waiting for the hot water tank to heat back up - tankless water heaters are instantaneous.
  • It saves you storage space. Tankless water heaters do not require an additional storage tank for hot water, so the compact heater takes up less space in your home.
  • Typically, tankless water heaters last longer than standard water heaters and they usually have a longer warranty. They can last over 20 years, which is double the lifespan of standard water heaters.
THE CONS
  • The initial cost of installing a tankless water can be much higher than a standard water heater.
  • Not all homes are prepared for installing a tankless water heater. The electrical system might need to be updated prior to installation, which could cost more money.
  • If there are multiple people living in your home, it may be beneficial to install more than one. If someone is taking a shower while another person is doing the dishes, the tankless water heater might not be able to provide enough hot water for all of these tasks.
Now that you have all of the information, you can make the decision if a tankless water heater is right for you.
