Stepping Up Your Home Security

Home security is important for you and your family to feel safe in your own home. Whether you want to know what is going on around your house, or you want to protect your home against theft and break-ins, there are steps you can take to make your home safer. Follow these tips to make your home more secure:

·       Make your home appear occupied at all times. Break-ins commonly occur when the house looks empty. Having a light on when you are gone can make it seem like there is someone home. You may even use a timer that you can program to turn on and off lights throughout your home. This works especially well for when you are gone for an extended period of time, like on vacation. If one of your neighbors has more than one car, having them park their car in front of your home can also add to the illusion that someone is home.

·        Install motion sensors to ward off potential break-ins. Placing lights above your porch, garage, or back door that turns on whenever movement is detected is another way to make your home safer. The light will scare off any intruders.

·        Secure your doors and windows. Make sure all of your locks are fully functioning, as well as your alarms. One thing to consider is installing a glass-breaking sensor that sounds an alarm when a window in your home is shattered.

·        Set alarms. Installing alarms inside your home is a great way to scare off intruders. Also remember to place the security system sticker outside to show that your home is protected.

·        Use phone apps as a surveillance device. “Ring” is an app for your smartphone that is connected to your home’s Wi-Fi system. When someone rings the doorbell your phone will ring, giving you the ability to view who is at your door through a camera that is installed on your front door. The app also gives you the ability to talk through a speaker to whoever is at the door.
