Whether it’s for design or cooling
purposes, ceiling fans can be a great centerpiece for the room. But before you
make a big purchase, there are some factors to take into consideration. Here
are some things you need to know before buying and installing a ceiling fan.
·
In order to determine what size fan you need,
you must first know the square footage of each room. You don’t want your fan to
take up too much space, or to not be able to reach every corner of the room. If
you aren’t sure what the square footage is, just multiply the length of the
room by its width. Once you have determined the size of the room, refer to this
handy chart:
Size of Room
|
Diameter of Recommended Fan Size
|
Approx. 80 sq. ft.
|
40 inches
|
Approx. 144 sq. ft.

Approx. 360 sq. ft.

You may also
consider installing more than one fan in the room if it is spacious enough.
This is sometimes the case for homes with open floor plans.
·
You should also consider the height of the ceiling.
The type of mounting rod will vary depending on how high or low the ceiling is.
If the ceiling is low, it should have a hugger mount. Ceilings with an average
height (around 8 ft.) should have a traditional mount with a down rod. Tall and
sloped ceilings require an extended down rod. This is so the fan can be placed
at a comfortable position in relation to the room (see picture below).
·
Quality is also a factor in choosing a fan. Fans
that are cheaply made may produce a humming sound when running. Higher quality
ceiling fans are sleeker and quieter. Keep in mind that the higher the MMs the
motor is, the more powerful it is.
Once you have found the right fan,
the final step is to make sure you have a licensed and insured contractor to
install it. Here are two final tips: For safety purposes, do not install fans
directly over the bed. Also make sure to
turn off fans when you leave the room to save energy. Fans do not work to cool
off the room, but rather the people who are in them.
