Using Renewable and Energy-Saving Devices In Your Home

This month, on the 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day. Earth Day is a worldwide event that focuses on supporting and protecting the environment. In an effort to be kind to our environment, here are some additions you can make to your home to be more energy efficient.

Low flow toilets: In the United States, the average toilet uses 3.5 gallons per flush. Using less than 1.6 gallons per flush, this toilet is incredibly water and energy efficient.

Dual flush toilets: Like the low flow toilet, this model uses significantly less water than a standard toilet. This system works like a normal toilet, but gives you two flushing options. The light flush, used for liquid waste, uses less water than the complete flush, which is used for solid waste. On average, dual flush toilets use 20 % - 30% less water than a standard toilet.

Solar panels: These panels are designed to absorb and harness the power of the sun’s rays. This energy is
in turn used for heating or electricity throughout your home. Each 6x10 panel is installed on top of your roof. Although it is an investment, it can be incredibly worth it – this alternative to fossil fuels helps combat greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

LED light bulbs: Incandescent light bulbs are not nearly as efficient as LED lights are. Because they require less wattage, LEDs do a better job of turning energy into light. Not only that, but they also last longer than regular bulbs. Try replacing your incandescent light fixtures with LEDs.

Whether you install a new toilet or set up solar panels, these additions will make a difference for the environment.  Happy Earth Day from ELA!
