Choosing the Right Lighting for Your Home

Although we don’t always recognize it, good lighting in a home makes a huge difference. When there is poor lighting in an office space, it can make it harder for us to focus. When the atmosphere in the dining room is a bit off, it could be attributed to poor lighting.

Here are some tips to help you light up your home the proper way. Feel free to use the following as a guide to choose the perfect lighting.

First of all, consider the function that the light provides you. Spaces that you have designated for reading, writing, and other activities that require your focus, should be well lit. Try to use desk lamps or even movable lamp fixtures so you can shine the light directly on the source you want. Different areas of your home need different types of lighting. For example, overhead lighting is best suited for kitchens and bathrooms. Overhead lighting is not only hands-off, but has the ability to light up the entire space.

The next tip is to be aware of the type of mood you want to create for a particular area. Take the living room and bedroom, for example. These areas are meant for relaxing, so you want your lighting to reflect that. If you would like to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, ditch the fluorescent lighting and go for tinted lights that include a dimming option. This type of lighting creates a relaxing environment, and is versatile as well.

Remember to also take placement into consideration. Overhead lighting should be placed somewhere it will be able to light up an important part of the room. In the bathroom, overhead lighting should be placed above the mirror and sink so it can truly serve its purpose. Also consider placing an overhead light above the shower. Lamps and wall fixtures should be placed in the corner of the room so they can illuminate areas that would otherwise be dim. Lamps should also be used to shine light on points of interest, such as on a coffee table, or over a lounging chair.

Finally, it is important to be aware of energy efficient lighting. LED lights are not only affordable, but they are incredibly energy efficient. Luckily, they have also become more diverse in the last couple of years. There are now different LED bulbs for every type of room, mood, and purpose. It is easy to access them as well – they are sold at major retailers, local hardware stores, and online. It is important to also remember that no matter what, turn off your lights when you leave a room. This will save you so much energy in the long run, and ultimately money.

Hopefully you are able to brighten up your home with this handy guide. If you are installing lighting fixtures in your home, make sure you are talking to a licensed and qualified contractor in your area.
