Energy and Water Efficient Landscaping

Summer in the desert means that as temperatures go up, so does your water usage, energy usage, and their subsequent bills. Improving your home’s landscape is a great way to cut costs and be kind to the environment.

Xeriscaping
xeriscape 2There is a trend in Arizona landscaping that promotes water efficiency called xeriscaping. Xeriscaping directly translates to “dry landscaping.” This style of landscape requires anywhere from a small amount, to virtually no irrigation. It is a way to cut down your water usage dramatically. And yes, it is possible to have a water-conscious yard that is beautiful and requires less effort.

In Arizona, xeriscaping is often referred to as desert-scaping. By desert-scaping, many home-owners are getting their landscape back to its desert roots. Literally. Converting to a desert-style landscape is also aesthetically pleasing, as it blends into the natural desert landscape. Here are some tips for altering your landscape:

    • Choose plants reflective of the environment. The dry climate of the desert isn’t always friendly to greenery, which means there is more watering and upkeep involved. To use less water, replace water-dependent plants with cacti.

    •  Reduce your turf area. Grass can be high maintenance, and it requires a lot of watering. Replacing these areas with rock or gravel could cut down water usage significantly. Synthetic turf is another popular option. This option allows you maintain the appearance of a grassy lawn while not having to water it at all.

Don’t forget, a huge benefit that comes along with being water efficient is the amount of money you will save in the long run.

Other Landscaping Tips
Strategic landscaping can also reduce your energy bill and increase the value of your home. A large or effectively placed tree provides much needed shade and can even act as a windbreaker.
