Your New Year's Resolution Home Guide

We’ve taken the last few weeks to reflect on 2014 and make new holiday memories with friends and family. Now that the New Year is here, we are focusing our intentions forward to 2015. Traditionally, New Year’s resolutions are reserved for personal improvements, which is very important, but what about home improvements? These are a few ideas to spruce up your home for 2015.

Complete an unfinished home project. This can include some craft art you are working on to add decor to your home or larger projects like repainting a room, restoring wood furniture, reusing reclaimed wood to make something new, or reupholstering that favorite old chair.

Get Organized. View ideas to help. This can includes getting rid of some clutter. It can feel liberating and can also give you a sense of well-being to donate unwanted items to a charity.

Update your photo albums and pictures on the walls. Are the only pictures you have up in your home from 10 years ago just before everyone stopped printing photos? Well, rectify that! Going through your digital photos to find printable gems may also be a well-treasured trip down memory lane.

blenderUse a rarely-used appliance. Is that juicer, bread-maker, and ice-cream maker collecting dust on your counter or in your cupboards? Find a use for these items at least 1-2 times per month. It will get your creative culinary juices flowing and you’re likely to whip up a savory creation that tastes better than prepackaged or restaurant food. This is also the test to find out if you really will put these appliances to use or whether you should post them to Craigslist once and for all.

Update some of your home accents. A palette change in a room or adding the right flare with patterns using accent items such as art, throw rugs, draperies, blinds, and throw pillows can give your home a fresh look for the New Year. Using gold accents, wallpaper, and cow hides are on trend for 2015. View some more 2015 trends to get inspired.

Re-pot houseplants. Ideally, houseplants should be re-potted every 1-2 years or when the plant seems to be growing out of the pot as it is here. Changing that frumpy old pot can also have the benefit of finding a new accent to go with other design changes in the home. Read this care guide for more on re-potting houseplants.

Get safety concerns addressed with a professional home inspection. Electrical inspections that include checking fire alarms work properly and for faulty wiring should be performed annually. A home security system or additional lighting can deter burglars. Installing a pool gate and cover can help prevent drowning. Many contractors provide affordable inspections or consultations.

Make some small but wise home energy changes. Update your home lighting to LED bulbs to save on electricity usage. Add faucet aerators and low-flow shower heads to your faucets to conserve water.
